Eddy De Smijter is Head of the Private Enforcement Unit, DG Competition, European Commission.
He joined the European Commission in 2001 as a member of the negotiation team on Regulation 1/2003 (on the public enforcement procedures of EU antitrust rules). After the adoption of the Regulation, he co‐authored the modernisation package (notices that accompanied the entry into force of Regulation 1/2003), with particular responsibility for the cooperation with national courts.
Eddy De Smijter stayed within the unit responsible for the European Competition Network until his move, in 2005, to the team that is responsible for the Commission policy initiative on antitrust damages actions. In that capacity, he co‐authored the Commission's Green and White Paper on that subject and was leading the team that on behalf of the Commission negotiated with the European Parliament and the Council the Directive on antitrust damages actions.
Before joining the European Commission, Eddy De Smijter was teaching and doing research in European law at the universities of Leuven (Belgium) and Tilburg (the Netherlands).
